How Skills are used

Learn how Giga reuses Skills across tasks, Agents, and repeatable work.

A Skill gives Giga a reusable method for handling a specific kind of task.

Once a Skill is available in the current permission scope, its instructions and supporting files can be used to guide that task instead of rebuilding the method from scratch.

Skills separate the method from the work

A Skill stores how a task should be done.

The actual work can happen in different places depending on the current Giga surface and permissions.

For example, the same task method may be relevant to:

  • a Chat
  • an Agent
  • a step inside a Workflow
  • other repeated work where the live environment makes that Skill available

The current live tool and permission surface determines exactly where a Skill can be applied.

Example: account research

Imagine your company has an Account Research Skill.

The Skill might define:

  • which evidence to prioritize
  • which company facts to collect
  • how to separate facts from inference
  • the qualification criteria to apply
  • the required output structure

A Sales Research Agent can then use that method when it performs account research, provided the Skill is available to the Agent’s current scope.

Skills and Chats

A Chat is useful for direct, ad hoc work.

When a relevant Skill is available in the current environment, Giga can use that reusable method as part of the task instead of relying only on the instructions typed into the current Chat.

Temporary directions still belong in the Chat.

For example:

  • Skill: “Use our standard account research method.”
  • Chat: “Focus on Acme and keep this one under 300 words.”

This lets the reusable method stay stable while the immediate request stays flexible.

Skills and Agents

An Agent can use Skills when the current Agent and Skill configuration makes them available together.

Use the Agent for:

  • role
  • durable instructions
  • Agent-specific context
  • Connections
  • broader responsibility

Use Skills for:

  • repeatable task methods
  • standards
  • templates
  • task-specific reference material

Skills and Workflows

A Workflow organizes a repeatable process into ordered steps.

A Skill can supply the reusable method inside one of those steps when it is available during execution.

For example:

Workflow stepReusable Skill
Research the accountAccount Research Skill
Draft the outreachSales Outreach Skill
Review the final messageBrand Review Skill

The Workflow controls the process order. The Skills carry the methods.

Availability follows permissions

A user can see Skills they own plus Skills shared into Groups they belong to.

That means a Skill must be available in the relevant scope before Giga should rely on it.

Giga should not assume every Skill in the workspace is available to every user or Agent.

Supporting files travel with the Skill

A Skill can contain more than its main instructions.

Supporting files can provide:

  • templates
  • examples
  • references
  • helper material
  • task-specific scripts or files when appropriate

Those files belong to the Skill’s reusable method.

They should stay focused on helping Giga perform that task consistently.

Updating a Skill changes future reuse

When the owner updates a Skill, the reusable method changes for future use of that Skill.

This is useful when a team changes its process, standards, terminology, or expected output.

Giga should read the current Skill before editing because the file set is replaced as a whole when files are updated.

One method, maintained in one place

Updating the shared Skill lets the reusable method evolve without copying the same instruction changes into every Agent or Chat.

Skill visibility

The live Skill and Group state are the source of truth for who can use it.

A practical rule

Use a Skill when you find yourself repeating the same task instructions.

If you are repeating the same role, create or refine an Agent.

If you are repeating the same multi-step process, create a Workflow.

If you are repeating the same task method, a Skill is usually the right home.
